Training Review - Week 29 - July 14 to 20

Monday, I went to the TPT swim session. I did some work on my turns in the middle of a stroke rate session.

Tuesday my iron-friend was doing her last easy bike ride before racing Ironman UK in Bolton this weekend. I pedalled out and back as well as a 45 minute route.

Wednesday I went out to Knockburn with a plan to run and swim. By the time I got there the weather looked like it was going to piss down and I was too tired to run. I decided instead to just do a longer swim and catch up with my run miles later in the week. I went in and coasted round the first lap easily enough, then stepped up the pace about half way through the second lap a bolt of lightning hit somewhere near by. I wasn't sure what it was at first, the flash of light and tingle in my right arm thought it was maybe a trapped nerve or something but the roll of thunder that followed It gave the 10 of us that were in the water a bit of a buzz, but nothing too severe, and no-one hurt. Unfortunately I was at the worst part for exiting the water so I had to finish the lap before I could get out. Half a dozen people were standing there chatting while a few others were standing at the water's edge keeping out of the loch instead it struck again. We all chatted away about how exciting it was for about 10 minutes and then the clouds cleared and left a beautiful clear sky and flat water. And everyone went back in and carried on. I did another 2 laps to clock my longest single swim of the year.

Thursday I was too tired to do anything I have done 4 fairly heavy days in a row so I took a rest day.

Friday I thought through the day that I would be fine for a longer run but by the time I got home I was empty. I forced myself to go out for a run but I couldn't even manage a 5k round the block. I cut it short, got home, had dinner, and then crashed out on the sofa and slept for hours.

Saturday's Dolphin hunting was postponed again. This time due to a hangover for my navigator.

Sunday the group ride option was going to be too long for me at 66 miles, so I had a look at their map and came up with a cut-off for 45 miles. Although it included a trip over Suie Hill. I went out in the morning but there were no takers for the crappy weather. I decided to go anyway and set off around my planned route. I got as far as Chapel of Garioch but I could barely drag myself up the Cat 4 climb there, so I realised there was no way I was going to make it over Suie and I cut through Blairdaff to Kemnay for just a 22 mile loop instead. About 5 miles from the end I rolled up behind another lone cyclist and we did a couple of turns each and had a bit of a chat.

Not the best week. Not dying from a lightning strike on the swim was the highlight. Not great on running this week or the ancillary sessions. And while the bike miles were all there, they were all very slow.

I am struggling to recover from racing last weekend. Not helped by this week at work and front loading my week rather than taking a recovery day.
